Family-Style Sweet Potatoes

When you think of Thanksgiving dinner, all the classics come to mind. For an entrée, you will likely serve some type of meat, such as turkey, ham, chicken, or duck. You might even go meatless and serve a Tofurkey instead. As much as everyone looks forward to seeing that main dish steaming on the table, let’s be honest. The sides really make the meal.

The homemade turkey dinner might catch your attention, but those delicious bowls of potatoes, green beans, corn, cranberry sauce, and butter rolls are what really make your mouth water. One of the most popular Thanksgiving side dishes is sweet potatoes or yams. There are a million ways to make them, and it’s pretty hard to mess them up.

This family style sweet potatoes recipe is easy to follow, and it doesn’t require a lot of ingredients. It has the perfect amount of sweet and savory flavors that make it a great compliment to your other holiday foods. It also makes enough to serve your entire family and any guests who may show up unannounced.

Sweet Potato Recipe Substitutions

One of the great things about this family style sweet potatoes recipe is that you can really make it your own and change it up if you don’t like it the way it is. If anyone in your family has a food allergy or is a picky eater, you can easily make up a batch of these sweet potatoes and substitute some of the ingredients.

You can easily leave out the maple syrup if you don’t enjoy this flavor. The other spices and brown sugar will still give the potatoes a sticky sweetness that will hit the spot. If you prefer sweet potatoes that are more sweet than savory, you can also leave out the onions.

Sweet Potato Toppings

A lot of people are happy with plain familystyle sweet potatoes, but some like to kick things up a notch with some toppings. You can prepare this recipe as is and then sit out some bowls of toppings for your guests to add to their servings. Pecans, walnuts, cinnamon butter, marshmallows, and marshmallow crème are just a few ideas. This allows each guest to give their potatoes the flavor they like and allows you only to make one dish of sweet potatoes.
