You Need to Try This Classic All-American Apple Pie Recipe

Few foods are as truly All-American as apple pie. Apple pie is one of the pillars of American cuisine. It's served at almost every Thanksgiving celebration, made throughout the fall season, and even enjoyed by some year-round. You can almost always find it on the menu at any classically American restaurant.

This recipe is as true to traditional apple pie as they come. Over the years, many bakers have put various spins on apple pie. We think sticking to what's traditional is perfectly fine. A recipe is, after all, time-tested for a reason! Your whole family will enjoy this pie recipe so much that they'll beg you to serve it again.

When choosing an apple variety for this pie, make sure to pick one that's suited for pie baking. Some apple varieties are too tart, or they don't bake very well. Many stores have signs telling you what uses each variety has. If your store doesn't, look for Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Golden Delicious apples. Most grocery stores should have at least one of these apple types.

All-American Apple Pie

Ingredients:

2 cups white flour
1 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup shortening
5 tablespoons ice-cold water
8 apples, pared and cored
2 tablespoons white flour
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 tablespoons butter

Directions:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

Mix together the flour, salt, and shortening until crumbly. Add the water and mix well.

Thinly slice the apples.

In a medium-sized bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and cinnamon; add the apple slices and mix well.

Take 1/2 of the pastry and roll flat; place pastry in a 9″ pie plate. Fill with the apple mixture and dot with butter.

Take the remaining pastry dough and roll flat. Place pastry on top of pie; crimp along the edges to seal.

Take a knife and cut slits into top of pastry to allow steam to escape.

Bake for about 50 minutes or until crust is golden.

Let cool and serve pie with whipped cream or ice cream.
