Tips for Making the Best Fudge

Making fudge is quite simple, but sometimes the idea of trying something new can feel very daunting. Follow these tips to make the perfect fudge:

Keep it simple at first. Trying unique or difficult fudge flavors will overwhelm you. It's important that you get the basics down before trying anything extra. Follow this recipe, or another basic fudge recipe, closely and make sure you get it down pat. Once you've got it down, make whatever changes you want!

Get your kids to help. Making fudge is definitely something your kids can help you with. There aren't a lot of complicated steps, so there's plenty for them to do. You should handle the boiling part of this recipe, as well as the part where you cut the fudge into smaller pieces. Your kids can definitely give you a hand with everything else! Of course, make sure your kids are well-versed in kitchen safety before having them help you with fudge.

Make sure you stir enough! Before the mixture is boiling, it's very important that you keep stirring constantly. Stir rigorously (obviously not so much that you splash the mixture), only stopping for a moment at a time if necessary. Once the mixture starts boiling, stop stirring and just let it cook. This is the key to excellent fudge. Once the mixture stops boiling, start stirring vigorously again.

If necessary, start over. If your fudge doesn't turn out right, you can melt it down and start again! Don't try to re-use the same fudge more than a couple of times, though. Fudge is great in that it's kind to those of us who make mistakes; we always have the chance to try again!
