Try This Unique and Delicious Citrus Glazed Ham Steak Recipe

Ham is often thought of as the perfect Easter dinner. And while it is great for a holiday dinner, it’s a really good dinner at any time of the year. A ham steak is a good source of protein and is an excellent complement to many side dishes.

Especially when compared to other types of meat, pork of any kind tends to be more budget-friendly. Ham is no exception. And you will be glad to know that ham is a type of meat that almost everybody likes. The worst thing is when you make recipes that your family won’t eat.

Fortunately, this is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. Your kids will love this savory-sweet version of ham. Serve it with the right side and you’ll have a meal that will keep everyone happy. Even better, this meal won’t require you to spend hours in the kitchen doing food preparation. Since this one is cooked on the grill, maybe you can even convince your husband to be the grill master and cook it for you.

Citrus Glazed Ham

Even though a plain ham steak is delicious on its own, most meats can taste even better when you add some extra flavor. Whether you choose a seasoning rub, marinade, or glaze, it can take your meat from good to great.

This citrus glazed ham will be a hit with your family because it has a delicious sweetness that’s sure to appeal. With honey or molasses and brown sugar, it adds the sweet flavor kids especially love. But the orange juice cuts the sweetness and adds a pleasantly sour taste to balance it out.

The combination of sweet and sour tastes adds a delicious complexity to a simple meal. Even though it’s sweet, it’s also surprisingly sophisticated. It’s well suited to equally complex side dishes to tantalize your taste buds.

Marinades and glazes work especially well on grilled meats, too. The smoky flavor of grilling plays off the glaze nicely, making it even more delicious. As long as you can access the grill, you can use it at any time of year. Summertime isn’t the only time of year when it’s appropriate to use the grill.

Other Ham Steak Recipes

A ham steak recipe is actually incredibly versatile. Although ham has a savory taste, its flavor is also easily adaptable to the tastes of other foods and sauces. Ham steaks are equally delicious however you decide to make them.

You have many options when it comes to making ham steaks, too. You can grill them, as this recipe suggests. You can bake them in the oven. Or you can even fry them in a pan on the stove top.

Many ham steaks are sold pre-cooked, so the most important thing is to just heat them to an appropriate temperature. The USDA used to recommend that you cook pork to an internal temperature of 160 degrees. However, they revised the standard in recent years, and now recommend cooking pork to an internal temperature of 145 degrees and let the pork rest for three minutes after cooking.

Other recipes for ham steaks call for a variety of different toppings or glazes. Many recipes call for some type of fruit, since the pairing of fruit with pork tends to be very popular. (Think about pork chops with apples, for example.) Pineapple, mangoes, peaches, or apples tend to go very well with ham.

Maple syrup is another excellent choice for serving with ham. The combination of maple and pork is also very common. Some types of breakfast sausage are even made with maple syrup already built in. Just think about how many times you serve pancakes and sausage for breakfast and the kids cover both with tons of syrup!

Sides to Serve With This Recipe

When it comes to what side to serve with this ham dish, you really do have lots of options. Of course, we can't not mention mashed potatoes. Mashed potatoes work with practically every meat dish, which is part of why it's such a popular side.

You can either make your own gravy or buy some from the store. If possible, we recommend making your own gravy. While it may be more time-consuming, it certainly tastes better. If all else fails, however, store bought gravy is better than nothing.

Mixed veggies can be a wonderful side for this dinner as well. To keep it easy on yourself, buy a big bag of frozen mixed veggies from the store and use that. Mixes that include green beans, carrots, and corn are common and a great choice.

Applesauce can be a very simple side to serve. It can be as simple as giving everyone an applesauce cup or as complex as making your own applesauce. Regardless of what you choose to do, your family will definitely love this side choice! Who doesn't love applesauce?
