Sausage, Potato, and Cabbage Stir-Fry Recipe

If you are stuck for what to make for dinner tonight, how about a stir fry? A stir fry is a convenient meal idea as you can use any combination of ingredients, including leftovers you might have lying around the kitchen.

Stir-frying is also a healthy way to prepare a meal. The food reaches a tender-crisp consistency that preserves the nutrients and, since only a small amount of oil is required, the fat content is low.

You can make a stir fry with various ingredients, but we just love the taste of this sausage, potato, and cabbage stir fry. Read on to find out how it is made.

Sausage Cabbage Stir Fry

To make the recipe, start by browning 1 lb. sausage in a skillet. Drain excess drippings.

Next, add about 3 cups of peeled and cubed potatoes to the skillet. Carrots are an optional ingredient and, if you choose to include them, you will want to use 4 carrots sliced thin or diced. Stir up the brown drippings from the bottom of the skillet and mix them through the meat and vegetables. Cover and cook until vegetables are almost tender.

Add 6 cups of coarsely chopped cabbage. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cover and cook 5 to 8 minutes until vegetables are tender, stirring frequently to prevent sticking.

This is a great dish to serve your family as it does not require any sides. With many food groups represented, the sausage and potatoes make the meal hearty while the vegetables add a light, flavorful taste. And while stir-frying is a healthy way to prepare any meal, the vegetables in this dish make a nice, healthy addition.

Sausage and Potatoes

Sausage and potatoes have been the staples of many meals for hundreds of years. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the two ingredients are often used together in a variety of dishes. While our stir fry recipe is a favorite, here is another meal you can make with sausage and potatoes.

20 Minute Sausage and Potatoes

To make this recipe, start by placing 1 lb. baby Yukon golden potatoes on a microwave-safe plate. Microwave 2 minutes on one side and 2-3 on the other until tender. Cut into quarters. Finely chop 2 tbsp. shallots and one large red pepper.

Add one tbsp butter and one tbsp oil to pot and heat on medium until butter is melted. Add in shallot and stir for one minute. Then add in 1 tsp minced garlic and stir for 20-30 seconds. Add one tbsp olive oil, 1 tsp. paprika, ½ tsp. roasted garlic powder, ¼ tsp. onion powder, and the red pepper. Cook while stirring with a wooden spoon 3-4 minutes.

Take one 13 ounces smoked hardwood sausage and cut into coins. (You can use turkey sausage for a healthier alternative). Cook 2-4 minutes, then combine all ingredients and cook until veggies are crisp-tender, butter is melted, and sausage is heated through. Add salt, pepper, and any additional spices and seasonings to taste.

Serve topped with freshly chopped parsley or parmesan cheese if desired. You can also add a creamy Dijon sauce for dipping if desired. This can be made by combining 1/3 cup whole grain mustard, 3 tbsp. mayo, and one tbsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice.

Can You Make This Recipe With Kids?

If you want to cook with your children, finding the right recipe is key. It's important to pick one that they can help with, because otherwise they'll be bored just standing there observing you. Sure, there are ways to make even that fun, but kids will strongly prefer being able to use their hands.

Is this recipe good for making with kids? We don't think it's ideal. There isn't a lot that kids, especially younger ones, can help with. A lot of the preparation and cooking takes place on the stove. Many kids won't even be tall enough to reach the stove without aid, much less capable of safely handling themselves around it.

If you have older children, however, they can aid you with this recipe. Just make sure to supervise them during the whole process, so that the risk for accidents can be kept as low as possible. While your older children help you prepare this meal, give them some pointers to help them learn.

If your children happen to make mistakes while cooking with you, be patient and understanding. They're still learning. Even the best cooks in the world didn't start as experts. Explain to them what they did wrong and help them learn from it. They'll be better cooks for it!

No matter how you slice it, (pun intended) sausage, potatoes, and carrots make a great base for any meal. They are healthy, hearty, and with a variety of food groups included, you just can’t go wrong. How will you be combining these ingredients to make a meal that is sure to please your hungry crew tonight?
