Other Dessert Ideas for Diabetics

Being diabetic is a challenge, but these other diabetic dessert ideas can help make it easier. The next time you're craving dessert, consider one of these ideas:

  • Fruit. Fruit is generally eaten as a snack or for breakfast, but it can be a dessert too! Grab a bag of frozen fruit from the store, or get yourself some of your favorite fresh fruit. Make yourself a fruit salad, and top with low-sugar cool whip if desired.
  • Low-sugar ice cream bars. There are now a number of brands offering low-sugar ice cream bars for diabetics and those trying to lose weight. Make sure you check the nutritional info on the back of the box; some low-sugar ice cream bars still have too much sugar for a diabetic.
  • Sugar-free Snickers. You can't buy these in the store, but you can make them! This treat substitutes rice malt syrup in place of sugar, giving diabetics a way to enjoy this delicious treat without harming their health.
  • Sugar-free popsicles. An especially good treat for summer, sugar-free popsicles are readily available in stores. You can also make your own by freezing sugar-free juices. Avoid grape juice, as this fruit is high in natural sugars that can spike a diabetic's blood sugar.
  • Ricotta cheesecake. This take on cheesecake has no added sugar, making it perfect for diabetics. It might not sound appealing at first, but give it a chance! You might be surprised at how good it is.
  • Greek yogurt pops. Greek yogurt is notably healthier than regular yogurt, making it a great snack for diabetics. Grab your favorite Greek yogurt, fill a popsicle mold with it, and freeze! This is another great treat for summer.
  • Sugar-free carrot cake. A lot of people enjoy this sweet-and-savory dessert. If you're one of them, you can make a sugar-free version! This is a great idea for a diabetic's birthday, since they'll be able to indulge in the cake with everyone else.
  • Applesauce cake. This is a very old recipe, dating all the way back to colonial times. This recipe is simple to make and delicious- perfect for fall.
