This specific recipe calls for four servings to be made, but that can obviously be increased if your family outnumbers that traditional model. As for the ingredients, an emphasis is placed on the onions, obviously, but the familiar players of soup remain present. You will need just three minced onions and three tablespoons of butter, to start with. On top of that, salt, pepper, flour, light cream, and milk all come into play. Additionally, to give this French onion soup its signature melody of flavors, you will add gruyere cheese and toasted slices of French bread that will truly make this soup a delectable one to devour.

The cooking of the onions takes five minutes and the simmering of the soup takes double that, but once you finish those two easy steps, you are already ready to serve the soup. It is a short recipe that is economical and delicious all the same!

How Long Will Onion Soup Last?

If you find yourself with leftover onion soup, you'll want to know how long you can expect it to last for. Onion soup is like many other dishes in that it will usually only last 3-4 days in the fridge. After this, you'll want to pay close attention to the soup to see if it has spoiled or not.

When storing your onion soup, make sure it goes in a sealed, airtight container. We highly advise against using a plastic baggie, as these aren't designed to hold soup. They can easily break open; the last thing you want is onion soup all over your refrigerator!

If you want your onion soup to last longer, you can freeze it. Many people meal-prep soup and then freeze it for the weeks and months ahead. Make sure you use a freezer-safe container or bag. Since the soup will be frozen, you don't need to worry about using a bag. Nonetheless, we still recommend using a heavy-duty freezer bag.

When freezing, make sure to label the date of freezing on each container. That way, you can easily keep track of how long your onion soup has been frozen for. Generally, you can expect frozen onion soup to last for at least a couple of months, possibly longer. Always check any leftovers for signs of mold, a bad odor, or a weird color or taste. All of these are definite signs that your soup has gone bad and should be thrown away.
