You Need to Try This Bavarian Potato Salad Recipe

A little more complicated than its American cousin, Bavarian potato salad is served warm. It should always have a sweet and sour taste. Connoisseurs prefer to use red skinned potatoes, in which case scrubbing rather than peeling would take place. Some also like the addition of ham, bacon, or sausage to the salad. Back in the Old Country, dandelions were used as decorative topping. This too is completely optional. Let's take a look at our take on Bavarian potato salad.

Bavarian Potato Salad Recipe

Ingredients:

4 cups potatoes (peeled and sliced 1/4-inch thick)
2 cups chicken broth
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/3 cup onion, chopped
1/2 teaspoon sugar
2 Tablespoons lemon juice
Pepper

Directions:

1. Boil potatoes in broth with 1/4 teaspoon salt for 5 to 8 minutes, until tender. Drain.

2. Toss warm potatoes with vegetable oil and onions.

3. Dissolve remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt and the sugar in lemon juice. Pour over potatoes. Add pepper to taste.

4. Marinate salad 1 to 2 hours before serving. Serve at room temperature.

What Can I Serve With This Bavarian Potato Salad?

Since this Bavarian potato salad has both sweet and sour flavors, you might be wondering what you can serve it with. Truth be told, there are plenty of options for meals to serve with this Bavarian potato salad. If you want to keep the healthy trend going, we suggest serving it with barbecue chicken. Barbecue sauce tends to be on the sweeter side, but still has a nice tang to it that will complement this salad well.

Chicken is one of the healthiest options out there for dinner. It's packed with protein, and lacks the saturated fats of red meats like beef. Plus, barbecue chicken is something your whole family will love, even kids!

If chicken isn't up your alley, you can also try using leaner ground beef to make hamburgers. By using the leanest beef you can find at the store, you'll be significantly cutting down on the fat content in each burger. This will make having burgers on a diet more feasible, and will allow you to comfortably serve them alongside this potato salad.

If being healthy isn't something you care too much about right now, then serving this potato salad alongside hot dogs or sausages is perfectly fine! This is especially true with sausages, since most sausages have a bite to them that will complement the complex flavor profile of Bavarian potato salad quite well. Remember that you have to serve Bavarian potato salad warm!
