Advice For Dealing With A Wild Child

While a wild child can at times be fun and engaging, sometimes you just want them to settle down! It's important that your child learns how to sit and be still before they begin school, since this will be an expected behavior of them.

Make sure your child has enough outlets for all of their energy. Get them involved in peewee sports, go on walks with them, or consider building a playground in your backyard. Mental exercise is great, too, especially for young children who are still learning a lot of basic skills and knowledge.

Teaching your child impulse control is a good idea. This will take time and a firm but kind hand. Take the time to teach them that there is an appropriate time to play and be rowdy, and an inappropriate time. The earlier they learn the difference, the better off they will be in school.

Establishing a quiet time each day will give your child the opportunity to develop their ability to impulse control. Pick one hour each day and define that time as “quiet time”. During this time, expect your child to sit quietly and do a calm activity, like reading, drawing, coloring, or something else. This will also get them used to the more structured approach that they'll have to their day in kindergarten and beyond.

If you find yourself truly struggling to control your child's energy, or if they seem to have severe difficulty concentrating, consider having them screened for ADHD and ADD. The sooner you can get a diagnosis for one of these disorders, the sooner your child can get the right help.
