The Baby Shower Cake
The cake can be both a dessert and a centerpiece, it will definitely be a part of the shower the mom-to-be will remember. I have seen amazing cakes that were baked and decorated by the hostess, and beautiful cakes that came from bakeries.
I prefer to make cakes for occasions like this. I don't get in over my head, and I buy a decorating package so I have everything I need. Those are actually very simple to make, while providing homemade taste but bakery professional style. If the thought of baking the cake yourself isn't something you feel comfortable with, you can always use one of the ideas below to take to a bakery for them to create. On the next few pages are dessert recipes, with the cake recipes first. You don't have to go with a traditional chocolate or white cake....the peach, lemon, strawberry, and other recipes lend themselves to decorating very well.
Below are some easy suggestions for decorating your baby shower cake.
This is a beautiful and easy Baby Quilt Cake that uses just one decorating tip to divide the "quilt squares". The rest of the decorations are included.
The decorating package, like all the cakes shown on this page, is available from
The Party Works. They give you everything you need to decorate with so you're not trying to piece together a certain design on your own. While I do suggest making the cake yourself, I don't suggest having it turn into a hodgepodge project that ends up causing you a lot of stress.

This adorable Rubber Ducky Cake has an edible art image to make the decorating even easier. This design also goes with the Rubber Ducky decorating theme, which includes everything from tableware to games.
You can decorate with a plain piped icing border, or use the rubber ducky sugars that come with it to add additional color and design. Use a white icing as your main background to highlight the vividness of the edibile art.
The Moon and Stars theme is very popular for baby showers, and the
Baby Moon Cake is a perfect centerpiece for it. This is also an edible art image. They're one of the easiest ways to decorate, but look professional when the cake is finished. You can vary the border by using a different tip, or by using the edible confetti moons and stars to form a border. Pipe a straight line around the top and bottom edges of the cake, then place the confetti into the frosting line to secure it for a colorful matching border.
The Baby Buggy Cake is cute, easy, and versatile. Molded cake pans are by far the easiest cake to decorate and this particular pan includes color photos of all four cakes with very easy to follow instructions.
The pan takes any two layer cake mix. If you need more servings, you can easily place the shaped cake on top of a flat frosted sheet cake for a dramatic three-dimensional look.
An alternative to a full cake is individual cakes, or cupcakes. The adorable Baby Face Cupcakes couldn't be easier, just frost each cupcake and insert one of the Baby Face pics. To achieve the "baby in a blanket" look pictured here, use a leaf decorating tip to pipe around each baby pic.
