Burgers are the ultimate comfort food, with a juicy patty, melted cheese, tasty toppings, and a yummy sauce. While White Castle offers sliders, rings, and bites in a convenient package to heat up at home, some folks think it's a bit overrated.
While everyone has a personal preference when it comes to the best burger joints, we believe these 8 burger joints truly stand out. Let’s dive into the world of delicious, mouthwatering hamburgers that will leave White Castle behind.
This post was updated in January 2026 to include updated information about popular burger joints that rival White Castle.
In-N-Out Burger
Founded in October 1948, In-N-Out Burger is one of the most popular fast-food restaurant chains in America. In-N-Out makes its own hamburger patties using 100% fresh USDA ground chuck. Furthermore, it’s free of preservatives, additives, and fillers.
What To Order
The double-double: two slices of American cheese, two beef patties, sliced or grilled onions, crispy lettuce, special spread, and juicy tomatoes on a freshly baked bun. If you are really starving, you can order the triple-triple, which has 3 patties, or the quad-quad, which has 4 patties.
Burger King
"A good burger is worth its weight in gold." - Mark Bittman. As of late 2025, Burger King operates more than 19,000 locations worldwide, with some reports listing 19,732 as of December 2024. Founded in 1953, this multinational American hamburger restaurant is a popular choice for many burger fans. Over the years, the menu has expanded and includes the basic French fries, burgers, sodas, and milkshakes.
Royal Perks
By signing up for the loyalty program, members can earn crowns, which can be redeemed for eligible Burger King menu items. Additional benefits include exclusive deals, birthday rewards, and the ability to earn Crowns for every purchase, which can be redeemed for eligible menu items.
Big Boy
"Burgers are a blank canvas for endless flavor possibilities." - Jamie Oliver. To buy a hamburger shop, Bob Wian sold his beloved DeSoto Roadster in 1936. He named his restaurant Bob’s Pantry. In 1937, the first double-decker cheeseburger was born.
What To Order
Big Boy has quite a large menu to choose from. There are waffle fries, salads, soups, pastas, burritos, biscuits, sandwiches, and burgers. The mushroom and Swiss burger is a delicious option to try. On a grilled brioche bun, you will find a tasty garlic spread, Swiss cheese, mushrooms, and caramelized onions.
Wendy’s
Founded in November 1969, there are more than 7,000 Wendy’s locations worldwide. Wendy’s is well known for its iconic square patties served on a round bun. French fries, chicken sandwiches, and hamburgers make up most of the menu.
Rewards
If you love Wendy’s as much as I do, then you should sign up for their rewards. For each dollar you spend, you earn 10 points towards free food. What should you try next? The big bacon classic triple. Three-quarters of a pound of fresh beef, American cheese, Applewood smoked bacon, tomato, crisp lettuce, pickle, mayo, ketchup, and onion on a toasted bun.
Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers
"Burgers: the perfect balance of simplicity and satisfaction." - Wolfgang Puck. Founded in 2002, there are over 550 locations. This American fast-food restaurant chain serves scrumptious steakburgers, chicken sandwiches, and Vienna beef hot dogs. They also serve the most delicious frozen custard, which is made several times per day.
Friendly Staff
As soon as you walk in, you are greeted by friendly staff. The restaurant is spotless, and the atmosphere is great. The steakburgers are juicy and cooked perfectly with a crispy edge. Furthermore, the fries are fresh and seasoned well, and pair well with Freddy’s notable fry sauce.
Steak ‘n Shake
Lettuce have a burgerlicious time! Founded in 1934, Steak ‘n Shake has just under 400 locations in the United States as of late 2025. They are well known for their popular steakburgers and hand-dipped milkshakes. Many of their restaurants are open seven days a week and 24 hours a day. Furthermore, their prices are reasonable, and the burgers taste amazing.
What To Order
Original Double Cheese ‘n Steakburger: made with 100% beef, you will find two steakburgers, lettuce, American cheese, tomato, ketchup, pickles, and onion. You can also add your own toppings. I recommend their crispy onion rings. Make sure to order those too.
The Habit Burger Grill
Don't be 'beef-uddled' - burgers are always a good idea. I absolutely love a freshly chargrilled burger. The Habits burgers are amazing, all cooked to order over an open flame. Service is fast; the garlic fries are absolutely delicious and full of flavor.
What To Order?
The Charburger with cheese was amazing. It’s topped with crispy lettuce, fresh tomato, mayo, pickles, and caramelized onions. I highly recommend ordering their tempura green beans, which also come with ranch dressing. Next time I want to try the Portabella Char.
Shake Shack
Finally, it's 'bun'-tastic! This burger is pure deliciousness. In 2001, this American fast-food restaurant chain started as a hot dog cart in Madison Square Park. It grew quickly, and in 2004, it received a permit to open a permanent kiosk within the premises and extend its menu to include burgers, milkshakes, and fries.
What To Order?
I love Shake Shack's crinkle-cut fries; they are always crispy and not soggy. I love their burgers with crispy onion rings; they are to die for. Furthermore, I enjoy their festive holiday deals, and I think that their chicken burgers are the best. In conclusion, I am a burger fan, and I personally think White Castle is overrated — these 8 burger joints are divine and should be at the top of the list.
