Across America, many small towns are still dealing with challenges that make everyday life harder for families. Limited job options, lower household incomes, rising costs, and fewer paths to economic mobility can all affect how far a paycheck goes and what opportunities are available for kids growing up there.
To find the most financially strained town in every state, this list uses five-year estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. The ranking focuses on communities with populations between 1,000 and 25,000 people and compares towns by median household income. The results show how different life can look from one small town to another, and how wide the gap can be between struggling communities and the rest of their state.
