The BMI chart gives you your BMI, which is a number that comes from using a calculation based on a person's weight and height. BMI is a good indicator of body "fatness" even though it doesn't measure it directly (as gyms and physicians do with body fat assessment tools). Finding out your BMI is an excellent method of screening for possible weight issues that can cause health problems. According to the BMI chart results, anyone with a BMI over 25 would be determined to be overweight and a BMI over 30 would be obese.
However, because BMI is not a direct measure of body fat and uses only height and weight in calculations, muscle counts towards the total calculation. What this means is that a very athletic person with quite a bit of muscle may have a high BMI but be in outstanding health with no risk for obesity. Muscle is desirable, but does weigh more which would artificially raise BMI concerns using just the BMI chart formulas. Each individual and their physician can determine if their BMI number is based mainly on body fat or muscle. If you have questions or concerns about your weight and its affect on your health, it is imperative to talk to your healthcare provider.
To use the BMI chart below, find your height (in inches) on the left. Go across the row to your weight (weights are rounded; choose the weight closest to your own). Follow the column your weight is in and look upwards to get the number at the top of the column. That number is your BMI. This BMI chart is for adults and is not age or gender specific. Separate charts for children and teenagers are available from your physician or the CDC.
To interpret your BMI number, use this simple classification:
If your BMI is below 18.5, you are underweight
If your BMI is 18.5 to 24.9 you are at a normal weight
If your BMI is 25.0 to 29.9 you are overweight
If your BMI is 30 and higher you are obese
