America's Most Popular Small Dog Breeds in 2025

There's a reason why dogs are considered man's best friend. Dogs are owned by nearly 60 million people in the U.S. — more than any other type of pet. What's not to love about these furry friends? They're great companions, and they can even be good for your health, according to numerous sources. Studies show that dog owners live longer than those who don't own a dog.

Whether you're currently a dog owner or you're considering getting a furry friend for the family, the sheer number of breeds out there can be overwhelming. Many dog owners prefer large breeds, but there are plenty of benefits to having a smaller dog as well.

Generally, a large dog is considered one over 60 pounds, and a small dog is one under 25 pounds. Anything in between is considered a medium-sized dog. While small dogs aren't exactly the type to guard your home or protect your family, there are plenty of benefits to having a dog this size.

On average, small dogs live longer than large breeds, and they're the perfect size to take on family outings. Even though they're small, they still give plenty of love and affection, providing the type of companionship you need to get you through the day.

We've created a list of the most popular small dog breeds in America, based on data from the American Kennel Club (AKC). We used the AKC's list of the most popular dog breeds for 2024 and included any breed under 25 pounds, according to the information the AKC provided about each breed.

Here's a look at America's favorite small dog breeds.
