Skip Starbucks and Go to These 7 Affordable Coffee Shops Instead
I'll be the first to admit that when I'm looking for a coffee shop, Starbucks used to be my first stop. It's convenient since there's usually one on every corner, and there's even one inside my local Target. However, considering how expensive it is nowadays to grab a latte or other coffee at Starbucks, I've started trying out more affordable options.
Whether you're looking for something convenient with a drive-thru, or you're just looking for a good cup of coffee that won't break the bank, we've got you covered with these seven affordable coffee shops you can choose over Starbucks.
How Much Is Coffee in 2025?
Before diving into some of the most affordable coffee shops to choose over Starbucks, let's first look at how much a cup of coffee costs in 2025. Of course, this depends on where you go and what type of coffee you order.
Even at an affordable coffee shop, a latte or frozen coffee drink will cost significantly more than a regular drip coffee. On average, a cup of coffee in 2025 costs anywhere from $3 to $12.
The Cost of Starbucks Coffee
When we look at Starbucks specifically, it's easy to see why someone might look for a more affordable coffee shop. A grande, or medium, drip coffee at Starbucks costs about $3.17 after tax. However, if you're going to Starbucks, there's a good chance you're looking for something a little bit fancier. A grande specialty cold brew costs about $5.86, while a grande specialty latte costs about $6.93.
Lattes are one of the most popular beverages at Starbucks, but a grande without any modifications will cost nearly $7. Many customers have pointed out that one of the things that also makes Starbucks too pricey is how much they charge for modifications. If you added an extra espresso shot to your latte, for example, it would cost an extra $1.25.
The Best Affordable Coffee Shops
If you're anything like me, getting coffee at a coffee shop is more of a treat than an everyday occurrence. Still, when you're buying coffee for more than one person or you have your kids with you, a quick trip to the coffee shop can end up costing $25-$30.
Here's a list of 7 different coffee shops that are affordable alternatives to Starbucks.
McDonald's
- Cost of Medium Coffee: $2.79
Before you immediately reject the idea of grabbing a cup of coffee at McDonald's, I have to say the coffee snob in me would agree with you. However, I've gotten coffee at McDonald's when traveling before, and not only is their coffee more affordable than Starbucks but their regular drip coffee is significantly less bitter. If I want a specialty drink, McDonald's definitely wouldn't be my first choice, but it's decent enough to grab a coffee and breakfast there.
Tim Hortons
- Cost of Medium Coffee: $3.19
Tim Hortons is a coffee shop that originally started in Ontario, Canada, but has expanded to the U.S. Although the majority of Tim Hortons are still in Canada, there are nearly 5,000 locations overall in 14 countries and 14 states in the U.S. Tim Hortons offers coffee, teas, and the famous Timbits, which are the chain's version of donut holes.
Dunkin'
- Cost of Medium Coffee: $3.73
Dunkin' is definitely one of the most popular breakfast and coffee shops in the U.S. After all, the slogan does say, "America Runs on Dunkin'." But Dunkin' offers more than delicious donuts — the chain is also known for its coffee drinks and other caffeinated beverages. I enjoy many of the coffee drinks at Dunkin', including their iced coffees, lattes, and cold brews.
Peet's Coffee
- Cost of Medium Coffee: $3.70
Peet's Coffee is another popular coffee shop that you've likely heard of, even if you've never visited. It's common to see Peet's Coffee beans in your local grocery store, but the chain also has numerous Coffeebars across the country. The menu at Peet's includes unique beverages such as the Cardamom Mocha Frappe or the Vanilla Iced Latte with Coffee Popping Pearls.
Scooter's Coffee
- Cost of Medium Coffee: $2
Scooter's Coffee is a coffee chain that started in Nebraska, with the first location opening in Bellevue in 1998. Compared to other popular chains, what makes Scooter's different is its drive-thru-only approach. The coffee chain is specifically designed to be enjoyed on the go, making it perfect for busy parents. The menu at Scooter's includes a lot of unique flavors, such as the Oatmeal Cream Pie Latte, as well as beloved seasonal favorites like the Pumpkin Spice Latte.
If you're looking for an affordable drip coffee, Scooter's offers a small brewed coffee on the Dollar Delights menu for only $1.
Caribou Coffee
- Cost of Medium Coffee: $2.99
Caribou Coffee is another coffee chain that has started to rise in the ranks and become one of the more well-known options out there. Although the history of Caribou Coffee goes back to 1992, when the first location opened, the brand merged with Panera Bread and Einstein Bros. Bagels in 2021, and there are now over 800 locations worldwide.
Dutch Bros
- Cost of Medium Coffee: $3.50
Dutch Bros Coffee is a chain coffee shop with headquarters in Tempe, Arizona. The company was founded in 1992 and started franchising in 1999. Like Scooter's, most of the Dutch Bros locations are drive-thru only. At Dutch Bros, you can enjoy drinks like the classic coffees, protein coffees, matcha teas, and energy drinks.
