Alcohol has been a part of human civilization for thousands of years, with evidence dating as far back as 7000–6600 BCE. The alcoholic beverages of antiquity were quite different from the refined spirits and beers we enjoy today. Ancient brews were created using natural fermentation methods without the aid of modern distillation, resulting in lower alcohol content and sweeter, more perishable drinks.

While fermentation remains a cornerstone of alcohol production, today’s techniques yield beverages with longer shelf lives, more variety, and greater potency. Still, many modern drinkers are fascinated by how these early civilizations created intoxicating concoctions using only the ingredients and tools available at the time.

To explore the history of these ancient beverages, we reviewed archaeological findings, historical brewing methods, and chemical studies published by research institutions and referenced by sources such as National Geographic, Smithsonian Magazine, and the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.
