Is Costco’s Sous Vide Grass-Fed Beef Sirloin a Hidden Gem?

Is Costco’s Sous Vide Grass-Fed Beef Sirloin a Hidden Gem?

If you're a long-time Costco shopper like I am, you've likely seen Costco's Grass-Fed Sliced Beef Sirloin. The item sits in the deli section next to cheeses and other popular “ready to cook” items like Kevin's meals. At a cost of a bit more than $10 per pound, you're paying a bit of a premium versus buying sirloin cuts. However, the Sous Vide Grass-Fed Beef has a key advantage.

It's super easy to make! You simply put it on a heated pan and warm each side of the sirloin for about 30 seconds. In this review, I'll dive into whether Costco's Sous Vide Grass-Fed Beef is worth it. Let's get started.

Costco's Sous Vide Grass-Fed Beef Sirloin comes from a company named Cuisine Solutions. The good news is this company specializes in sous vide, so they know what they're doing.

In general, most containers weigh about two pounds. This beef comes in two separate plastic pouches, each weighing about a pound. Pricing can vary, but I've found you're looking at about $10.99 per pound. The recent Sliced Grass-Fed Beef Sirloin container I bought was 2.04 pounds and cost a little more than $22.

Your mileage may vary on how that pricing compares to stores around you. My local Safeway shows USDA Choice top sirloin at about $12.99. I've seen Costco sell top sirloin “whole cap” (Picanha) for as low as $5.99 per pound. Of course, you'll need to put in more work trimming 5-plus pounds of beef if you buy your top sirloin this way.

The key benefit of Costco's Grass-Fed Beef Sirloin is simple. It has outstanding quality and is also very convenient.

The quality comes from being cooked via the sous vide method. This method slowly heats up beef at a uniform temperature and leads to more tender meat and intense flavors.

Convenience comes from the fact the beef is already cooked and you simply need to heat it for 30 to 60 seconds in a heated pan. If you're looking for an entree that requires about five minutes of work and is high-quality, it's very hard to top this item.

How Good Does the Grass-Fed Beef Sirloin Taste?

Honestly, it's almost impossible to cook Costco's Grass-Fed Beef Sirloin poorly. The beef is in very thin slices that you pull apart. This allows you to simply place each small piece on a pan and heat each side for about 30 seconds. There's no fear of undercooking as it comes ready to serve even if you didn't heat it!

I cooked the sirloin for my kids who are picky eaters. So, I was conservative and left the sirloin on for a bit longer than I'd personally prefer, but it still came out tasting delicious.

It should be noted that the sirloin is packed in a plastic package that seals in juices you can add to the pan for additional flavor.

We paired the sliced sirloin with one of Costco's Caesar salad kits. Overall, the meal took less than 15 minutes to prepare, yielded two pounds worth of cooked beef, fed a family of five, and cost less than $30.

As I noted earlier, it is possible to buy choice sirloin for cheaper prices, but the fact you're getting prepared sous vide steak that's delicious and convenient at this price point is hard to beat.

One other “hack” I think that's worth mentioning is that this steak is excellent for meals like fajitas or quesadillas. If you buy a container of this steak, it should keep in your fridge for about a month, and of course freezing is always an option, especially if you plan to use it later in meals like quesadillas.

A single pack (about $11 worth of meat) yields more than enough steak for a large family to enjoy high-quality quesadillas. The steak can also be added to salads or any number of other recipes.

Here's the bottom line on Costco's Grass-Fed Beef Sirloin: it's high quality and delicious. If I was rating this item on a 1-10 scale, I'd give it about a 9. I've never tried a convenient steak product that was as delicious. The only downside would be the cost might be a bit higher than you'd like if convenience isn't an important factor.

Healthwise, Grass-Fed Beef Sirloin has about 120 calories per 3 ounces. As it's steak, you can expect some measures like cholesterol, saturated fat, and sodium are a higher percentage of daily value. However, that's balanced by a tremendous amount of protein (19 grams per 3 ounces) and almost no carbohydrates.

If you're looking to pair this sirloin with sides, I'd recommend a salad kit if you're looking for convenience and want to be healthy. If you're looking for some comfort food, Costco's new “Loaded Mashed Potatoes” are a decadent accompaniment.
