17 Ultra-Processed Foods Families May Want to Cut Back On

Packaged snacks, frozen meals, sugary cereals, and grab-and-go foods can make busy family life a lot easier. When you are juggling school, work, practices, errands, and dinner, convenience matters. But some ultra-processed foods come with a downside, especially when they become everyday staples instead of occasional shortcuts.

Ultra-processed foods are often made with refined ingredients, added sugars, excess sodium, unhealthy fats, flavorings, preservatives, and other additives that help them last longer and taste more appealing. Research has linked diets high in ultra-processed foods with a higher risk of several health concerns, including type 2 diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease-related death, and some mental health outcomes. That does not mean every packaged food is equally bad, but it does make it worth paying closer attention to the items your family eats most often.

For many households, cutting out convenience foods completely is not realistic, and it does not have to be the goal. A better approach is knowing which foods are worth limiting, reading labels more carefully, and swapping in more filling options when possible, such as fruit, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, beans, nuts, and less-processed meals.
