20 One-Hit Wonders From the ’70s Everyone Still Knows

Some songs do not need a second act. They arrive, climb the charts, and somehow stay with us for decades. More than 40 years later, you can still hear them playing through the speakers at a restaurant, in a grocery store aisle, or on an oldies station and find yourself singing along before you even realize it.

The 1970s were full of those lightning-in-a-bottle moments. Plenty of artists released one massive hit that seemed to capture the sound of the era, only to never reach that same level again. But that does not mean the songs disappeared. In many cases, they became part of the background music of American life.

Some are fun and catchy. Some are surprisingly polished. A few are genuinely great songs that outlasted the careers that produced them. Whether you grew up with them or heard them years later, these 20 one-hit wonders from the ’70s are still stuck in our heads for a reason.
