How To Cook Kielbasa Perfectly, 3 Ways

No matter what traditional Polish dish you make with kielbasa, you might wonder, what are the best ways to cook a kielbasa perfectly? The best ways to cook kielbasa are to pan-fry, oven-bake, grill, or boil kielbasa. Let's talk about kielbasa and take a deeper look at ways to cook it perfectly.

What Is Kielbasa?

Kielbasa is a Polish word that translates to sausage. In Poland, there are hundreds of different types of kielbasa. However, in America, if you're purchasing kielbasa, it is likely a smoked pork sausage. You can also find turkey, beef, or combo meats if you don't want a pork sausage. In Poland, the most popular kielbasa is “Kielbasa Polska,” which is a pork sausage and is usually served with fried onions.

Pan-Fried Kielbasa

To pan-fry kielbasa, slice the sausage into pieces, or you can cut it into sections. Heat oil in a pan on medium heat, and once the pan is hot, you can add the kielbasa. You will want to cook the kielbasa until the skin has been browned and the middle of the sausage is hot all the way through. This can take about five to eight minutes. When pan-frying kielbasa, it's great to add fried onions or eat it like a hot dog.

Oven Baked Kielbasa

If you want to oven-bake your kielbasa, preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Depending on your preference, you can cook it as one big piece, cut into sections, or slice it. Once prepared how you want it, place it on a greased baking sheet and roast the kielbasa till it is browned and hot all the way through. This can take about 20 minutes but will vary depending on how you cut your sausage.

Boiled Kielbasa

Boiling a kielbasa will be similar to how you would boil a hot dog. Poke the kielbasa a handful of times with a fork and then place it in water. Once the water comes to a boil, lower the temperature and cook for another five to ten minutes. Remove from the water and serve to your liking!

Grilled Kielbasa

If you love grilling, grilled kielbasa makes for a delicious meal. Heat up the grill and place either the whole sausage or three to four-inch sections of the kielbasa on the grill. Poke the sausage a handful of times with a fork and turn the sausage frequently. Cook until it is browned and hot all the way through. This can take around 12 minutes. Grilled kielbasa is commonly served with grilled onions and peppers.
