How to Get Started Looking For A Dog

So you're at that point in the dog-searching process when you're ready to start looking for a specific dog to adopt. Likely, you've settled on whether you want a puppy or an adult dog, and roughly what breed or breeds you're interested in.

The next step is finding the right breeder or rescue, depending on the age of dog you're looking for. Make sure you take your time and do lots of research. Avoid any rescues or breeders without stellar reputations. Consider both the positive and negative reviews you see online.

Always avoid backyard breeders. A backyard breeder is often only in the puppy breeding business for profit; they do not care about the breed standard or about caring properly for their animals. Many backyard breeders double as puppy mills, putting their dogs in horrible conditions for the sake of making a profit. The puppies that come out of these breeders are often poorly socialized and in poor health. Many backyard breeders end up getting cited or shut down for animal abuse or neglect.

If you're adopting a rescue dog, take the time to visit with the dog before adopting if you can. Many shelters will allow you to spend time playing with and walking a dog you're considering. Take this time to see how the dog acts around you. Is it nervous or friendly? Does it warm up to you after a while, or does it remain skittish? Don't forget to ask about the dog's background, including why it was surrendered to the shelter. This information can help you make the right decision about whether you'll be adopting a particular dog.
