15 Strange Things Your Body Does Every Day That Still Puzzle Scientists

Before you even sit down for breakfast, your body has already handled dozens of tasks without asking for permission. You may wake from a dream, stretch, yawn, feel hungry, shiver, blush, or suddenly remember something you thought you had forgotten. Most of these reactions feel so ordinary that we barely notice them, yet many are far more complicated than they seem.

Scientists have mapped the human genome, explored the deepest parts of the ocean, and sent machines across the solar system. Even so, they still do not fully understand why some everyday body functions happen or what purpose they serve. These 15 strange things your body does on autopilot continue to raise questions, and a few may make you look at your daily routine very differently.

Why You Dream

Every night, your brain puts on a show. It may be a mundane or nonsensical one where your childhood home has an extra room, and your old boss is a talking dog. When you wake up, you forget most of it and get on with your day.

We know dreaming mostly happens during REM sleep and the brain’s activity is on a high gear when you dream, but nobody has settled why. Some say that dreaming is how the brain files the day's memories, sorting the keepers from the junk. According to a second theory, dreaming rehearses threats, so being chased in your dream means practicing for real danger. Many scientists think that dreaming has no purpose at all, just a byproduct of a brain idling with the lights off. After more than a century of study, that's still an open argument.

Your Gut's “Second Brain”

The intestines also have their own nervous system. There are hundreds of millions of neurons in your intestines, so many that researchers nicknamed it the second brain, and it can run a lot of digestion without checking in with the one in your skull.

Then there are the bacteria. There are trillions of them inside your gut, and a growing pile of research links them to your appetite, even your mood and how you handle stress. The chemicals they produce appear to talk to your brain through the nerves and the bloodstream. To what extent they actually steer your feelings and cravings, versus just going along for the ride, is one of the hottest open questions in the field right now. You're carrying around a second control center, and we're only starting to understand what it does.

Hiccups have no known job. They don't help you digest or breathe. The leading guess is almost funny. They may be a leftover reflex from our fish and amphibian ancestors, a motion related to gulping down air and food from when we had gills. And there is no proven cure either, which is why everyone swears by their own trick, from holding your breath to a spoonful of sugar. None of them reliably work because we don't understand the mechanism well enough to target it.

Crying Real Tears

There are a lot of animals that make tears to keep their eyes wet and protect them from dust or irritation. Only one cries because it feels something, and that is you. Well, us. Emotional tears are a little different, chemically speaking, from the kind that appear when you chop an onion or get something in your eye. They contain different proteins and hormones, suggesting they may serve a purpose beyond basic eye protection. Why humans evolved to leak saltwater over grief, joy, frustration, or relief is still unresolved. The best guess is that visible tears signal vulnerability, show that you need support, and pull other people closer. That explanation makes sense, but it is still more hunch than proof.

The Placebo Effect

Put a sugar pill in someone's mouth and tell them that it's medicine. A very real fraction of people will get real relief. Pain drops. Symptoms ease. Nothing pharmacological happened, yet the body responded.

The placebo effect is arguably the most reliable and the most baffling thing in medicine. Expectation alone can trigger measurable changes in the brain and body, and that’s why every serious drug trial has to beat a simple sugar pill to prove it works. How belief converts into physical change is only partly understood, and it happens quietly, all the time, whenever you expect to feel better and then do.

Getting “Hangry”

Skip a meal and watch your mood curdle. You snap at someone over nothing, then eat a sandwich and feel like a reasonable person again.

Turns out being hangry has some real biology behind it. As the stomach becomes empty, it produces ghrelin, the blood sugar level drops, and both send signals up to the brain that tangle with the regions handling emotion and self-control. The rough outline is clear. The precise wiring, why a dip in fuel can flip your temperament so fast, is still being mapped.

Why Yawns Are Contagious

A spontaneous yawn may serve to cool down the brain. You breathe in deeply, helping regulate the temperature up top. That part makes sense

The contagious bit remains unexplained. Watch someone else do it, and you'll probably follow along. Reading the word can set you off, too. Certain scientists believe that yawning synchronizes alertness levels within a group, a leftover from when staying coordinated kept everyone alive. There is no proof of it yet, though. 

What’s crazy is that you probably yawned reading this.

What Makes You Feel Full

You eat, then at some point your body says enough. Simple, right? But it's one of the least understood things you do every day.

There are two types of hunger fighting for the wheel. Homeostatic hunger is the real thing, your body needs fuel. The other type is hedonic, the reason why there is always room for dessert even when you're stuffed. 

There is a complex team of hormones (such as ghrelin, leptin, GLP-1, PYY, and more) shuttling from the gut to the brain, trying to manage all of it. GLP-1 is the same pathway behind the big weight loss medications everyone is talking about, which tells you how much money is riding on cracking this. Yet, the complete picture, including why the satiety signals are working for some and not for others, is far from being understood. Every meal you finish runs on mechanisms that scientists are still trying to reverse-engineer.

Why You Need Sleep at All

You’ll be unconscious and defenseless for approximately a third of your life. From a survival standpoint, it’s a very odd trade, which means it must be doing something important. The trouble is pinning down what. Sleep clearly helps the brain repair itself and lock in memories, and there's evidence it flushes waste out of brain tissue. But whether its main job is memory, cleanup, energy conservation, or something we haven't named yet is still debated. We know we die without it. We just don't fully know why yet.

Get caught in a lie or singled out for praise, and your face goes hot red before you can even think about controlling it. You can't start it or stop it, and everyone can see it happen.

Here's what makes it strange. Humans are the only animal that blushes from emotion. Even Darwin himself said that it was the most peculiar and most human of all expressions, and he couldn't explain it at all. That's the puzzle. Blushing broadcasts the exact feeling you'd usually want to hide, which seems like the opposite of useful. The best current guess is that visibly showing embarrassment signals honesty and helps smooth things over socially, a kind of involuntary apology. It's still just a theory, but it’s a reasonable one. 

That Itch You Have to Scratch

We understand itching reasonably well. The urge to scratch it is where it gets weird, because scratching often makes the itch worse, but we still do it anyway.

The receptors that carry itch signals sit right next to the ones that carry pain, and scratching seems to briefly jam the signal with a competing sensation. That relief is short, and the irritation can crank the itch back up, so you're caught in a loop. Why the body built such a self-defeating system hasn’t been explained yet. 

Goosebumps

You feel cold air hit you, and tiny muscles pull your hairs upright, giving you goosebumps. Back when we were furrier, that puffed-up coat trapped heat. Now it doesn’t really do anything.

But why do we get them during a great song or an emotional moment? That's the part science can't cleanly account for. A leftover cold reflex firing on a wave of feeling is strange, and we’ve all felt it. 

Why You Can't Tickle Yourself

Try it. Run your own fingers over your ribs and nothing happens. Let someone else do the same thing, and you're squirming.

The going explanation is that your brain predicts your own movements and cancels the sensation, so a self-tickle never lands. That ties into a bigger unsolved question anyway: nobody is really sure what laughter and ticklishness are even for in the first place.

That Falling Jolt as You Drift Off

You're almost asleep, and suddenly you feel yourself drop, like missing a step on the stairs. Your whole body jerks, and you're wide awake again.

This phenomenon is known as a hypnic jerk, and up to 70% of people have experienced it. The honest answer to why is that we don't really know. It’s believed that because of the relaxation of muscles while sleeping, the brain misreads the looseness as falling and throws out a reflex to catch you. Might be right, but nobody has confirmed it yet.

Sneezing at Bright Light

Have you ever walked out of a dark room into bright sunlight and suddenly sneezed? If so, you may have the photic sneeze reflex, a strange response that affects roughly one in four people and often runs in families. Somewhere in the body’s wiring, the signal created by intense light appears to cross paths with the nerve pathway that triggers a sneeze.

Scientists have a general idea of what may be happening, but they still do not fully understand the mechanism or why some people inherit it while others do not. It also has a great backup name, by the way. The condition is called ACHOO syndrome. Even if we cannot explain it completely, we at least gave it a name worth remembering.
