These 12 Nostalgic All-You-Can-Eat Restaurants Will Remind You of Your Childhood

The first all-you-can-eat buffet in the United States was established in 1946 at the El Rancho Vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada. Opened by Herb McDonald, it was called the Buckaroo Buffet and was open 24 hours a day. The concept of buffets quickly caught on, and this type of restaurant model was popular for decades. If you grew up in the 80s and 90s or were raising kids during that time, you may have fond memories of visiting some of these buffets.

Even though there are still many all-you-can-eat restaurants around, these types of restaurants aren't as popular as they used to be. More customers are focused on healthier dining and sustainable options that minimize food waste. The COVID-19 pandemic didn't help, and many once-popular American buffets closed down for good in recent years. Some of the nostalgic buffets that recently closed include:

  • Old Country Buffet
  • HomeTown Buffet
  • Ryan's Buffet

However, there are still many all-you-can-eat restaurants open today, and some that previously closed down, such as Sweet Tomatoes, are starting to make a comeback. If you're ready for a blast from the past, check out this list of 12 nostalgic all-you-can-eat restaurants that will remind you of your childhood.

This post was updated in August 2025 to include some of the popular all-you-can-eat restaurants that multiple generations are familiar with.
