Nature Walks, Eggs, and Decorations: 10 Creative Ways to Celebrate Easter With Kids

Families celebrate Easter in different ways around the world. Although there are some activities we typically associate with Easter, when it comes to the ways you create memories with your family, you get to choose your own fun and traditions.

From filling Easter baskets for your friends, family, and neighbors to baking egg-shaped Easter cookies, there are many creative ways to celebrate Easter with those you love. If you're looking for ways to celebrate that kids of all ages will enjoy, consider some of these options.

The Importance of Family Traditions

In the fast-paced world we live in, it's easy to get caught up in things that are exciting and flashy. Sure, there's nothing wrong with wanting to participate in activities that are Pinterest-worthy or ones that match your Instagram feed, but when it comes to family traditions, the meaning goes a lot deeper.

Once your kids grow up, they probably won't remember every gift they were given, but they will remember the time you spent together and how you made them feel. Simple activities such as baking cookies or decorating your home may not seem memorable, but the warm feelings that come from these traditions are often what kids remember most.

No matter what your family life or situation looks like this Easter, don't put pressure on yourself to do elaborate activities or spend a lot of money. It's more important that you find ways to spend quality time together doing something the whole family can enjoy.

10 Ways to Celebrate Easter With Kids

You don't have to plan anything elaborate to have a memorable Easter with your family. You certainly can plan an Easter party or brunch if you have the time and budget, but keeping things simple with crafts, games, and other at-home activities can be just as fun. If you're looking for some new traditions to try this year, consider one of these 10 creative ways to celebrate Easter with kids.

Plan an Easter Egg Hunt

Easter egg hunts are fun for the whole family — and the best part is you don't have to stop having them when your kids get older. Little kids have a lot of fun looking for eggs filled with candy, stickers, and other treats. But if you only have tweens, teens, or even adult children, you can still hide eggs so the family can have a blast! Fill the eggs with everyone's favorite candy, temporary tattoos, or even cash.

Decorate Your Home for Spring

Spring is a time to celebrate new life, so if you haven't refreshed your home decor in a while, why not make it an Easter tradition? Aside from spring cleaning, there are plenty of other ways to refresh your home. Buy some new throw pillows with floral patterns, let the kids create homemade spring decor, and add some fresh flowers to your table.

Celebrate With an Easter Party

If you've got the bandwidth to do so, throw an Easter party. It can be for your neighbors and friends, or you can keep it small and only invite your family. There are so many Easter-themed recipes to choose from, like this adorable Easter bunny cake. You can even plan a craft for everyone to do or an Easter egg hunt for everyone to participate in.

Fill Easter Baskets

Filling Easter baskets is usually something parents do for their kids, but there's no rule that says you can't also create Easter baskets for your friends, neighbors, and family. Consider thinking of someone who might not have family or friends to celebrate with this Easter. It could be a neighbor or an elderly relative. Enlist the help of your kids and put together a basket of things the person would love. You can even add a personal touch by adding Easter cookies or a craft your kids made to the basket.

Cook a Fancy Meal

It's common for families to plan a beautiful Easter meal, whether you choose to host Easter brunch or Easter dinner. Ham is often a traditional main course on Easter, but there are plenty of other options if your family wants to try something different. There's no reason you can't cook a pot roast, grill some steak, or even bake salmon for your Easter meal.

Dye Easter Eggs (Or Something Else!)

Dyeing eggs is another common Easter tradition, one that kids love. There are various methods for dyeing eggs (some use vegetable oil while others use onion skins), but if you don't want to use eggs, you can dye other items instead. Some alternative items that work well include potatoes, marshmallows, and pasta. If you're looking for something your kids can keep, you can also try wooden eggs, rocks, or even coffee filters.

Do a Craft Together

Speaking of things you can keep, crafts are a great way to celebrate Easter together. You don't have to spend hundreds at your local arts and crafts store to plan something fun. Instead, use items you have around the house, such as empty toilet paper or paper towel rolls and construction paper. If you need some ideas, check out our list of Easter crafts.

Plant a Garden

For most of us, springtime makes us think of new life  — and what better way to celebrate this life than by planting a garden? If you're looking for a fun Easter tradition that's also meaningful, take your kids to the store to pick out their own seeds for planting. Spring is a great time to plant seeds, and you can witness the growth together as a family.

Spend Time in Nature

If you don't have space to plant seeds of your own, you can still spend time in nature to celebrate springtime and Easter. Consider finding a local nature park or preserve and planning a family hike. If you haven't taken your kids on a hike before, the idea may seem daunting, but it can also be extremely rewarding.

Bake Something Together

When you invite kids into the kitchen to help, things can get a little messy. However, a little bit of extra clean-up time is worth it when you're making memories. Baking something together is one of our favorite ways to celebrate Easter, and it can be fun and educational for kids. If you have little ones who aren't quite ready to help, you can bake cookies ahead of time and let them decorate, or even purchase a pre-made cookie decorating kit at places like Target.
