Don’t Let Your Kids Leave the Nest Before You Visit These 7 Places as a Family

Some of the greatest memories happen while on vacation with your family. Bonding over new experiences is a beautiful thing, and nothing can replace those shared moments. Many people say it's not the destination that matters as long as you're together. But we say it's the destination and the company that can only make your family vacation one to remember.

Travel is a valuable, life-changing experience for kids, and the destination plays a significant role in that. There are just some bucket list spots that deserve to be explored, whether your family craves adventure, history, fun, or all three. If you need ideas, this is the perfect place to start planning your ultimate family trip!

Grand Canyon National Park Road Trip

The Grand Canyon sees between 4 and 5 million visitors each year, and your family could be part of that. It's a bucket list destination for a reason: Unbelievable views, diverse wildlife, and a long history make this national park one of the best. It's also worth crossing one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World off your (and your kids'!) lists. The Grand Canyon is also extremely kid-friendly, particularly around the South Rim. With stroller-accessible trails and fun excursions like the Grand Canyon Railway, there's plenty to do.

Depending on which side of the Grand Canyon you visit, you can also squeeze another national park into your vacation: Zion. It's roughly 3-5 hours of driving time from the Grand Canyon, and is worth spending an extra few days in the area. There, you'll also find stroller-friendly trails, river access for swimming, and plenty to explore at the Zion Nature Center. For older teens, a trip through the Narrows or the Canyon Overlook Trail is perfect for adventure lovers.

Disney World and a Cape Canaveral Detour

We know, we know, everyone goes to Disney. But there's a reason for it, and that's because it's awesome. It's a dream for kids of any age, and with four major parks to choose from, it could easily become a week-long vacation. There are ways to fit Disney into many budgets, making it more cost-efficient than other Florida vacation spots. And if you have the money to spend, the sky is the limit regarding where you stay and what your family does.

Another perk to visiting Disney World is that it's only an hour drive from Cape Canaveral. Whether your kids are fans of space travel, this is a must-visit on Florida's coast. The entire world watched Artemis II circle the moon before returning to Earth, and you can show your family where it all began. A trip to Kennedy Space Center is easy and will make your family feel like they witnessed a piece of history.

Big Island, Hawaii

If you want to take your family on an island adventure without leaving the U.S., Hawaii is the place to go. It's far enough that it still feels exotic, but doesn't require international travel. The Big Island offers everything: pristine beaches, five-star resorts, snorkeling, boating, wildlife tours, hiking, and incredible food. Learning about Hawaii's culture is a great way to spend the day, especially with some volcanic sightseeing.

Depending on the timing of your trip, you may also see native species, such as sea turtles, during their nesting season. The Big Island is also extremely kid-friendly and offers plenty for older kids to do if they need a little freedom. Most resorts offer an extensive list of activities, meaning you can choose when (and if!) you leave the poolside.

New York City, New York

No bucket list is complete without adding one of the greatest cities in the world. New York City has earned its reputation for a reason. Aside from the stereotypes about its pizza and bagels, New York City offers an infinite number of activities, tours, and sightseeing spots for families. Its museums, parks, and iconic landmarks are worth the hype, and even more surreal in person. Whether it's taking in the view at the top of the Empire State Building or sizing up a T. rex at the Smithsonian Museum, your family will have plenty of memorable moments.

The best part about it all? New York City offers a budget for everyone. If you have a high budget, consider staying in Manhattan in the middle of all the action. If you're looking to save some money, stay in Brooklyn or Queens and opt for the subway. It's not as difficult to navigate as it seems, and, despite their reputation, many New Yorkers will be happy to point you in the right direction. If public transportation is off the table, you can often find a hotel within a ten-mile radius of most activities —along with an incredible pizza spot.

Tokyo, Japan

International travel might feel daunting, but Japan is a surprisingly easy city to navigate. It's exceptionally family-friendly, and you'll find that it's also a city of convenience. Everything, from public transportation to public park layouts, is designed to make things easy. The city itself is also clean and walkable, with specialized museums and shopping to suit any family's interests. While it helps to know some common words in Japanese, it's not necessary to be fluent to find your way around.

For kids, Tokyo feels like one giant adventure park. From the flashy streets of Shibuya to the calm, serene paths found within the city's parks, no two days look the same. You can even spend a day at Tokyo Disneyland, which has rides, treats, and souvenirs you won't find anywhere else. If theme parks aren't your family's thing, explore Tokyo's most iconic markets or visit one of its many temples. This is also the perfect city for fans of anime and gaming!

Copenhagen, Denmark

When most people think of a classic European vacation, Rome or Paris typically comes to mind. However, families shouldn't sleep on Copenhagen as a destination. This city is beautiful, with more to do as a family than you think. It's one of the most walkable cities in the world, with a consistently high walking score. With no hills to navigate, it's extremely kid-friendly, especially for parents with strollers. Its colorful, historic buildings are just as entrancing as its waterside charm, making it perfect for a laid-back yet still fun vacation.

surprising number of time zones

Copenhagen is also known for its food, so if you're a family of foodies, this vacation is a must. Spend the day at Tivoli Gardens or King's Garden, then head to any one of the city's museums for some hands-on fun. You can easily see the city via a boat tour, which also offers unique views you won't get from simply walking. Copenhagen is also home to a world-famous zoo and the Den Blå Planet Aquarium, two bucket-list stops if you're visiting.

Vancouver, British Columbia

Of all the cities in Canada, Vancouver is often voted the most family-friendly. If it's not the coastal views that inspire awe in your family, it's the host of activities this city offers. Stanley Park is known for its beaches and seasonal activities, and there's always something happening, no matter what time of the year. This is also where you'll find the aquarium, which is perfect for spending a rainy day (as is often the case in Vancouver!).

Granville Island's Kids Market is another favorite for visiting families. This two-story indoor market has everything from unique shopping to arcade games. The Public Market is another great place to explore, offering artisan gifts and handmade items by local vendors. After strolling and stopping for lunch, you can visit Science World and sit back as your family takes in its views and its exhibits. One of the best parts of Vancouver is also its family-friendly neighborhoods, which offer peace of mind.
