Apple Crisp Recipe

Aunt Lillian’s apple crisp recipe was amazing and was one of the many homemade treats she made. Her apple crisp recipe was made with fresh crisp fall apples, plenty of cinnamon and brown sugar, and always served warm with vanilla ice cream. Aunt Lillian’s apple crisp was a taste of heaven in every bite.

She was prim and proper, with lace doilies on every table. Her house sparkled, but you never felt uncomfortable. Baking was her way of letting you know prim and proper didn’t mean uptight and missing out on the great things in life, like fresh out of the oven apple crisp.

Aunt Lillian’s apple crisp recipe uses a brown sugar topping, balancing out the tartness of the apples without being overly sweet. The Granny Smith apple is one of the best apples for this apple crisp recipe, but any tart pie baking apple works well.

For those of you that like a cobbler-type apple crisp, we’ve included another version. Mama Shirley’s Apple Crisp Recipe uses a Bisquick and sugar mixture (which makes it more like an apple cobbler). Mama Shirley’s is every bit as good as Aunt Lillian’s, and many a debate has been started over holiday dinners regarding the merits of a crispy or a crumbly topping.

Either way you make it, you’ll love apple crisp and the way the aroma of fresh baked apples and spices fills the house like a cozy blanket of warmth.

Aunt Lillian’s Apple Crisp Recipe

Apple Crisp Ingredients:

6 cups peeled, sliced apples (about 6 large apples)
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
3/4 cup flour
1/2 cup packed dark brown sugar
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Apple Crisp Directions:

1. Place apples in a greased 8-inch square baking dish or a 1½ quart casserole.

2. Combine the granulated sugar and the cinnamon, stirring well.

3. Sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture over apples.

4. Combine the flour, dark brown sugar, butter and vanilla; mixing with a spoon until a crumbly mixture is formed and all ingredients are well blended.

5. Spread this mixture over the sugared apples.

6. Bake the apple crisp in a 350-degree oven for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the topping is a golden brown.

Serve the apple crisp warm, topped with vanilla ice cream.

1 egg, slightly beaten
1 stick (1/4 lb.) butter, melted

2. Mix Bisquick, sugar, baking powder and salt. Add egg and mix.

3. Pour mixture over apples.
