Outrunning the Gap: How Early Support Shields Kids From Academic and Emotional Fallout

Everyone has their own way of learning. Even among your own children, you may notice that one learns best by watching YouTube tutorials, while another prefers quiet, independent study. While learning styles vary, sometimes a child may experience challenges that may require additional support. That’s why it’s important for parents to understand how to spot learning differences earlier rather than later, because it can make a huge difference in your child’s academic and emotional journey. 

What Are the Early Signs of Learning Differences?

Learning differences refer to how children process, understand, and apply information — not their intelligence or potential. For example, maybe reading is hard for them, but building a 4000+ piece LEGO set is a breeze. And it’s common for the transition from elementary to middle school to be the time when differences in how students learn become more apparent.

“Learning differences can vary depending on the specific challenge,” explains Dr. Jennaca Cotton, a clinical professor and early education expert at Pepperdine University's Graduate School of Education and Psychology.

Here are some signs of early learning differences:

Dyslexia: Early signs include challenges with sound awareness, blending letters into words, or the ability to rhyme. Identifying a word’s beginning, middle, and ending sounds is another indicator. 

ADHD: Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder may have trouble focusing on age-appropriate tasks, following multi-step directions, or controlling impulsivity. Hyperactivity can also impede their ability to develop academic skills. 

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and executive functioning challenges: While these often overlap with ADHD in areas like focus and attention, those with ASD may struggle with planning, organization, and time management.

Sometimes, children express their challenges indirectly. “If your child says something like, ‘I’m stupid’ or ‘I’m just too dumb to get it,’ that can be a sign they need extra support,” says Dawn Friedman, MSEd, a parent educator and clinical counselor. Sharing that their friends are farther along in their studies than they are can also provide a clue. 

Why Does Early Support Before Middle School Matter?

Whether it’s you or your child’s teacher who notices a learning challenge, addressing it early is crucial. “Early intervention is one of the best tools to help children thrive, providing skills that will serve them throughout their academic careers,” Cotton explains. “If these challenges aren’t identified early, difficulties can compound each year.” By middle school, these academic gaps can grow significantly. 

The impact isn’t only academic, though. “High anxiety and stress around school is common and can lead to significant mental health challenges,” says Cotton. Friedman agrees: “Children with learning differences are at higher risk for self-confidence issues, anxiety, and depression. Early identification — and more importantly, creating supports — helps protect children emotionally as well as academically.”

What Can Concerned Parents Do to Help Their Child?

Sure, your child may not be getting the best grades in social studies, but hey, learning about early settlements can be a snooze. Often, the distinction comes down to consistent difficulty in grasping key concepts. 

“Many learning differences are on a spectrum, and while most children have little challenges that they encounter during learning, it doesn’t mean that they have a diagnosable learning disability,” says Cotton. “The difference is in the frequency — if a child is consistently struggling more than another child in their developmental stage, it can indicate something more.”

So what should you do if you’re concerned about your child’s academic development? Talk with your child’s teachers. “Teachers see many children at the same age and can gauge which behaviors are typical or concerning,” Friedman advises. Other professionals — like your child’s pediatrician, learning specialist, or the school psychologist — can offer additional insight and offer support channels to address your child’s specific learning needs. 

Your child may benefit from a formative academic assessment, which provides invaluable data on early identification and resolution of learning challenges, according to a National Institutes of Health study. This information can help guide tailored support plans for your child. 

How Can Parents Partner With Schools for Support?

You’ve probably heard the expression: “It takes a village to raise a child,” and that’s definitely the case when it comes to addressing your child’s learning differences. That’s why you should view your child’s teacher, reading specialists, counselors, and therapists as pivotal partners. Says Cotton: “It’s a team effort, and everyone wants your child to succeed.”

Here are some steps to take:

  1. Get all adults involved to observe your child’s challenges. 
  2. Pursue an official diagnosis. 
  3. Explore interim accommodations — extra time on tests and assignments, frequent breaks, earplugs in noisy classrooms, or easy access to a counselor’s office if they’re feeling overwhelmed.

What Tools or Assessments Can Help?

A professional who knows your child can be the best starting point. “Understood.org is a great non-profit and a great starting point,” says Friedman. “I send clients there when they have questions about their child or after an official diagnosis.”

HealthyChildren.org is another great parent-friendly website, as well as ReadingRockets.org.  The International Dyslexia Association has a great support system for parents and wonderful local conferences, workshops, and groups for parents to receive support and help,” Cotton adds. 

How Should Parents Talk to Their Child About Learning Differences?

Middle school can make kids especially sensitive to feeling different, and speaking with your child directly is crucial. “It’s important for kids to get the message that this isn’t a deficit — there is nothing wrong with them,” says Friedman. “Systems are created for typical brains, so children with atypical brains need different support. The issue is the system, not the child.”

You can say: “You have ADHD, which means you have a busy brain with lots of amazing ideas and creativity. That can make it hard to focus or switch tasks, and that’s okay. It just means you’ll sometimes need extra support.” Above all, reassure your child that they are loved and valued for exactly who they are.  

It’s important to address your child’s learning differences, but keep in mind that it’s just one part of who they are. Although it can be a challenging journey, there’s something beautiful in thinking outside the box. And maybe, understanding and accepting learning differences can teach all of us invaluable life lessons in acceptance and celebrating our differences.
