38 U.S. Cities Where Household Incomes Rose the Most Last Year

In recent years, the cost of living in the United States has risen faster than wages, putting pressure on household budgets. Between mid 2020 and mid 2023, consumer prices jumped nearly 19% while wages grew by less than 10%. More recently, however, wage growth has begun to outpace inflation, offering some relief to families.

As of April 2025, the typical full time worker earns $1,196 per week, up 4.6% from a year earlier, while consumer prices increased by 2.3% over the same period. Annual median wages also rose 3.0% from 2023 to 2024, with especially strong gains in community and social services, transportation, and installation and repair jobs.

Still, national averages only tell part of the story. In some cities, incomes are rising far faster than the U.S. overall. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Moms Who Think identified 38 metro areas where median annual wages increased by at least 7.5% between 2023 and 2024, with several seeing gains above 10%.

In most of these cities, job growth is also strong. The majority are located in the South and West, with Florida accounting for seven of the top metros. These are the U.S. cities where incomes climbed the most over the past year.

Within the last four years, inflation hit a multi-decade high in the United States, with the Consumer Price Index peaking at 9.1% in June 2022. As the cost of living rapidly outpaced wage growth, millions of Americans struggled to afford basic necessities. In the years since, not only has inflation slowed, but wage growth has also accelerated. In dozens of major U.S. cities, the median annual wage increased by thousands of dollars between 2023 and 2024.
