If you are looking for something to put on your holiday table or you just want another option when it comes to feeding your family, ham and noodles are great ingredients to work with. The ham is a great source of protein while the noodles provide a hearty texture that makes a perfect evening meal.

The recipe we have here is for a casserole that features pasta and ham blended perfectly with other ingredients to give it a great flavor your entire family will love. Read on to find out more about this dish and other ham and noodle dishes your family will enjoy.

Ham Noodle Casserole

To make this recipe, start by preparing 8 oz of egg noodles according to package directions.

Cook one cup chopped onion in a small nonstick skillet until tender.

In a mixing bowl, combine 2 large eggs and 1 cup sour cream. Add onion, as well as ¾ cup Swiss or Monterey Jack shredded cheese and 1 ½ cups, cubed cooked ham. Add noodles and mix well.

Pour mixture into a sprayed 2-quart casserole. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes. Uncover and bake an additional 10 minutes or until casserole is heated and mixture is set.

When all the ingredients come together, it makes for a dish you can really dig into. It is both creamy, cheesy and hearty making it great comfort food and the perfect addition to the holiday table.

And if you’re serving it as a meal for your family, there is no need for a side as a variety of food groups are represented. However, the dish works well with a big salad or fresh greens on the side.

Of course, there are variations you can make on the dish. If you want to up the health quotient, you can add veggies like green beans, peas or broccoli. You can also substitute the egg noodles with any other type of pasta. You can also replace the ham with any other type of meat you prefer.

German Ham and Noodle Casserole

Even though ham and noodles are both popular ingredients in America, the ham and noodle casserole is a dish often served in Germany. Over there, it is called Schinkennudeln or Nudelauflauf.

Although recipes for German recipes are pretty similar to the one we have here, we found a variation that is almost like a ham and noodle lasagna. Here’s how it’s made.

Boil water and cook 1 lb. of cut ziti according to package directions.

In the meantime, take 1 lb. of cooked ham sliced into strips about ½ thick and then cut into squares.

Beat 3 extra large eggs, add 1 cup sour cream, ½ cup milk and a pinch of salt. Mix until smooth.

Butter a casserole dish. Place half the noodles in the dish and then add one layer of ham. Cover with the other half of the noodles.

Top with the sour cream mixture, then a layer of mozzarella cheese and finally small pieces of butter.

Place into an oven preheated to 360-375 degrees on middle rack. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until cheese is crusty and sour cream mixture is curdled.

This is another dish that goes well with a salad to make for a well-rounded meal.

Another variation on the recipe is called German Macaroni and Cheese with Ham.

To make this recipe, start by boiling 1 lb. of flat egg noodles.

Place chunks of ham, sausage and onion in a food processor and grind until coarse.

Lightly sauté the meat mixture until onions are soft and add a tsp. or pepper to taste.

Put 1/3 of the noodles into the bottom of a baking dish. Layer ½ of the meat mixture.

Combine sour cream, eggs, and nutmeg until eggs are beaten. Pour mixture over the casserole making sure it seeps to the bottom.

Top with breadcrumbs and sprinkle with paprika. Then slice up butter and sprinkle on top.

Bake 30 minutes at 325 degrees, then turn the oven up to 350 and bake for an additional 15 to 30 minutes. Casserole should be bubbling and lightly browned on top.

Serve with a salad to make a complete meal.

With ham and noodles as the base of your casserole, you really can’t go wrong. How will you be preparing this dish for your family tonight?
