10 Movies From the '90s Worth Watching With Your Kids
The '90s were a great time for kids' movies. Whether you grew up in the '90s or you were raising your own kids during that time, you're probably familiar with some of the classics. Movies like Toy Story, Mrs. Doubtfire, and The Mighty Ducks fill many of us with the kind of nostalgia that comes from the best parts of being a kid.
For Millennials, the top kids' movies of the '90s were part of what defined our childhood. Many of us remember having movie night with family, complete with pizza, Capri Sun, and one of the classic family films.
If you're trying to plan a movie night for your family with some of the best movies from the '90s, we've got a list of 10 favorites for you. Any of these family classics would be perfect for your next movie night.
The Rescuers Down Under
- Release Year: 1990
- Rating: G
"The Rescuers" was released in 1977, but the year 1990 gave us the sequel, "The Rescuers Down Under." In this film, we see the return of Miss Bianca and Bernard as they save Cody from the poacher, Percival C. McLeach.
Aladdin
- Release Year: 1992
- Rating: G
Some of my kids' favorite Disney movies include some of the classics originally released in the '90s. While our family does love the 2019 live-action "Aladdin," starring Will Smith, we return to the original film quite a bit.
The Lion King
- Release Year: 1994
- Rating: G
"The Lion King" is another classic Disney film every kid (and adult) should see at least once. While Disney did make "The Lion King 2," "The Lion King 1 1/2," and two CGI animated versions, nothing beats the original.
Thumbelina
- Release Year: 1994
- Rating: G
This film has a prince, fairies, and a toad who kidnaps Thumbelina — what's not to love? It's an enchanting story that's still worth watching after all these years. This retelling of Hans Christian Anderson's fairy tale is a classic that kids of all ages will love.
Flubber
- Release Year: 1997
- Rating: PG
It's no surprise that Robin Williams' movies make this list several times. For those of us who grew up in the '90s, he was an integral part of our childhood. "Flubber" is the kind of hilarious and fun film that kids can still enjoy today, no matter how old they are.
The Parent Trap
- Release Year: 1998
- Rating: PG
The 1998 version of "The Parent Trap" is a remake of the original 1961 film. Not all remakes are done well, but this film is one I watched over and over again as a kid (and now my kids do the same). This film is what ultimately led to actress Lindsey Lohan's fame.
The Iron Giant
- Release Year: 1999
- Rating: PG
"The Iron Giant" is a truly heartwarming tale that is still one of our family's favorite movies. This timeless classic is set in the 1950s and tells the story of a boy who becomes friends with a robot that crash-landed on Earth.
Jumanji
- Release Year: 1995
- Rating: PG
If your kids are a fan of adventure, they'll love "Jumanji." I can't say I've personally watched either of the remakes, but if you're a fan of the films starring Dwayne Johnson, the 1995 version is worth watching with the whole family, too.
Mrs. Doubtfire
- Release Year: 1993
- Rating: PG-13
"Mrs. Doubtfire" is the kind of film everyone should see at least once. Robin Williams stars as Daniel Hillard, a divorced father who's willing to do anything to spend more time with his kids (even if it means disguising himself as their housekeeper).
Toy Story
- Release Year: 1995
- Rating: G
You can't create a list of the best films from the 1990s without mentioning "Toy Story." Not only are there three sequels to this film (with "Toy Story 5" set to release in 2026!), but it's the kind of film that continues to capture our hearts over 25 years later.
