What Apples Are Best for Bread Pudding?

With so many different varieties of apple out there, it can be hard to know which one is right for your bread pudding. When making bread pudding, you want to avoid softer apple varieties, such as Macintosh. They'll become mushy when baked. While this might be okay for other baked goods, this isn't ideal for bread pudding.

Instead, use firmer apple varieties. Granny Smith apples are very common choices for bakers, and are a perfect selection for apple bread pudding. They hold their structure well when baked, and have a taste that meshes well with the sweetness of many apple desserts. Other common apple varieties that are used for apple bread pudding include Gala, Fuji, and Honeycrisp.

If you'd like to select a different variety, simply follow the guidelines we've established. Look for an apple that is on the firmer side, particularly one that is intended for baking use. Be wary of apples that are too sweet in flavor, as this could throw off the flavor profile of your apple bread pudding. Of course, if you want your apple bread pudding to be on the sweeter side, that's a different story!
