Yams and apples are a delicious side dish for fall meals. It’s a great healthy dish to serve with Thanksgiving dinner. Yams have the same consistency as a potato, and they are not sweet like sweet potatoes, but they have their own unique flavor when combined with other foods.
They are very nutritious and include vitamins and minerals like B6, E, C, potassium, and fiber. This recipe is sweet and satisfying and you could make a glaze with cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.
This yams and apples recipe calls for golden delicious apples which are crisp apples with a sweet and mellow flavor. This dish can be made in a crockpot or baked.
It can be served with marshmallows, or maple syrup, or even cranberries. You can substitute the sugar with brown sugar and add in some cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg to spice it up. The yams could also be substituted with sweet potatoes. You could also add some toasted graham cracker crumbs and crushed pecans over the top of the dish as well.
To add some more sweetness you could include slices of pineapple and maraschino cherries to the dish. Some variations of the yams and apples recipe calls for a cup of dark rum. This would deepen the flavor of the dish.
You can also use other kinds of apples like a tart granny smith along with a little fresh lemon juice, or sweet Honeycrisp apples.
This dish can be served with baked ham or roasted chicken. It’s also a popular side dish with roasted turkey for the holidays. Other side dishes that complement this savory dish include green bean casserole, homemade macaroni and cheese, and a fall cornbread stuffing with cranberries, pecans, and sausage.
This side dish is delicious almost any way they are served. This versatile recipe can be adjusted, and other ingredients can be added based on your own personal tastes and preferences.
