Yams and Apples

Yams and apples are a delicious side dish for fall meals. It’s a great healthy dish to serve with Thanksgiving dinner. Yams have the same consistency as a potato, and they are not sweet like sweet potatoes, but they have their own unique flavor when combined with other foods.

They are very nutritious and include vitamins and minerals like B6, E, C, potassium, and fiber. This recipe is sweet and satisfying and you could make a glaze with cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice.

This yams and apples recipe calls for golden delicious apples which are crisp apples with a sweet and mellow flavor. This dish can be made in a crockpot or baked.

It can be served with marshmallows, or maple syrup, or even cranberries. You can substitute the sugar with brown sugar and add in some cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg to spice it up. The yams could also be substituted with sweet potatoes. You could also add some toasted graham cracker crumbs and crushed pecans over the top of the dish as well.

To add some more sweetness you could include slices of pineapple and maraschino cherries to the dish. Some variations of the yams and apples recipe calls for a cup of dark rum. This would deepen the flavor of the dish.

You can also use other kinds of apples like a tart granny smith along with a little fresh lemon juice, or sweet Honeycrisp apples.

This dish can be served with baked ham or roasted chicken. It’s also a popular side dish with roasted turkey for the holidays. If you have a lot of people coming for holiday dinner, be sure to make a large casserole full of yams and apples to serve them as this dish is sure to be a hit.

  • 6 to 8 yams
  • 5 to 6 golden delicious apples
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • ¼ cup butter
  • 1½ Tablespoons cornstarch
  • ½ teaspoon salt


  1. Boil yams until barely tender (whole or cut width wise, in big pieces). Peel. Cool.
  2. Slice and alternate yams and peeled apple rings in buttered casserole dish.
  3. Boil together sugar, water, butter, cornstarch and salt, until it begins to thicken.
  4. Pour over yams and apples and bake covered at 350°F for 1 hour.
